Kathleen Manning is an artist based in Victoria, Canada. She works in graphite, charcoal, conté, pastel, and pastel pencil.
Kathleen's work focuses on drawing as an art form in itself. She is especially interested in the human figure, preferring to draw from life. In this way she hopes to capture an intuitive reaction to a specific pose, gesture or feeling, thereby giving her artwork a sense of emotion. For portraits, she likes to start the drawing from life, finishing with photo reference as needed. The dramatic effects between light and dark upon the form continue to fascinate her and she often tries to incorporate this into her artwork. Kathleen is currently enjoying learning to paint in oils, concentrating on figurative and portraiture.
Kathleen has had a lifelong interest in art starting with drawing and painting lessons at the Victoria Art Gallery as a child. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Victoria with an emphasis on drawing and printmaking. She then worked in the Tourism and Hospitality industry, including a position as photo arts technician and graphic artist. Being a full time mother of three kept her busy for many years. Eventually she was able to resume her art interests and studies.
